Endometriosis, which goes beyond ‘period pain’, affects 43 million women in India
Researchers have advised the government to make national guidelines for the diagnosis of endometriosis, which affects about 43 million women in India.
In endometriosis ,tissue similar to uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, forming lesions on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines, bladder, and other areas.
The study has been conducted by researchers associated with Delhi-based The George Institute for Global Health India, in collaboration with partners from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the National Institute for Research in Reproductive and Child Health, and the University of Oxford, UK.
The World Health Organisation in its report claimed that Endometriosis affects about 10 percent of women and girls worldwide, which can cause excruciating pain, bowel problems, and infertility, among other problems.
Although most women are diagnosed in adulthood, it has also been observed that women may start experiencing pain in adolescence, but their symptoms are often under looked by woman’s family and society. In many parts of society, diseases related to women are not discussed openly and are not treated on time. Every year, women in rural areas die due to this common disease, which is not taken care of and treated on time.
