Karnataka to ban hookah bars and sale of tobacco
The Karnataka Assembly on 21 February 2024 amended the COTPA Act (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products) to ban all hookah bars in the state from selling cigarettes and other tobacco products keeping in mind the health of the youth who are below 21 years of age. The sale of products has also been banned.
There is a provision for imprisonment of one to three years in lock-up and a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh for those found guilty of violating this rule. According to the notification, the ban has been imposed after amending the existing Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) to protect the health of citizens and prevent tobacco-related diseases.
Tobacco use weakens people economically and invites many diseases, including cancer, lung disease, heart disease, and stroke. It is one of the leading causes of death and disease in India and also causes the deaths of approximately 1.35 million people every year. India is the world’s second-largest tobacco producer and user.
