The Assam government repeals Muslim marriage and divorce law
The Assam government has decided to declare the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act 1935 invalid. This proposal was approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 24, 2024. Now all marriages and divorces in Assam will be according to the Special Marriage Act.
Linking this move to the Uniform Civil Code, Chief Minister Sarma said it would help in preventing child marriage in the state since marriage registration was done as per the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935, but during that time it made no difference. It was important to know the age of the boy and the girl, and most of the girls were married at a very young age, due to which the girls had to face a lot of problems.
