Mesmerizing view of lunar halo at IIMC
A unique view of the lunar halo was seen on the night of 21 March 2024 at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram state.
Let us look about the lunar halo a little more closely-
We get to see various types of events or scenes in the sky. A halo is sometimes seen around the sun or moon, which appears near the sun or moon in the form of a ring, i.e. a spherical circle. This is the result of the presence of ice crystals in the atmosphere. These ice crystals are present in the troposphere at an altitude of about five to ten in the Earth’s atmosphere.
The troposphere is the lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere. It contains 75% of the total mass of the planetary atmosphere and 99% of the total mass of water vapor and aerosols, and is where most meteorological events occur. When sunlight or moonlight falls on the troposphere, these act as tiny prisms and split the light into different colors, creating a new form that is quite a mesmerizing sight.
Srishti, a student of Indian Institute of Mass Communication, looks up at the sky, her face filled with excitement and calls out to her friend Teesha, and Shantanu and Nitish, who are present there, also look up at the sky. The pure beauty of the sky was like a thirsty person getting water in the scorching heat of a desert. The solace that the soul gets inside was far beyond this view.
