Nine-year-old girl raped, International Women’s Day tomorrow

Many people attended the funeral of a nine-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered in Puducherry on Thursday, March 7, 2024.Police said the girl had gone missing on Saturday evening, while her body was found on Wednesday inside a sack thrown in a drain.

The police said his hands and legs were found tied with rope. A case of murder and sexual assault has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the SC/ST Act.

The administration has arrested two people, including a 19-year-old youth, and has also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case.

The girl’s parents reported her missing to the police on March 2, and a search operation was launched to find her. But the girl’s body was found floating in a sack in a drain near her house and was later sent for a post-mortem.

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangaswamy and Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan met the girl’s family and announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh.

Every day, some innocent girl is being raped somewhere in India. NCRB reports every year are alarming; in 2022 alone, 38,911 cases of child rape and penetration attacks were reported, which is a significant increase from 36,381 cases in 2021. The number for 2020 was 30,705, and for 2019, it was 31,132. 30,917 cases were reported in 2018.

Governments will just give compensation and get photographs taken. These are the figures of the NCRB given above, whereas in the rest of India, more than half of the rape cases are suppressed due to many reasons like death threats, fear of a bad name in society, etc.

Tomorrow, i.e., March 8th, is International Women’s Day. Everywhere, people will talk about the development of women and post stories on social media. From village sarpanch to people holding high positions in the country, poems will be written and read in honour of women in some educational institutes; some will plant trees and some will plant saplings on that day, and they will take photographs and get them published in the newspaper. According to the report, within this time, some innocent girl or woman might have been raped.

In this society where we live, no one person can be blamed; the filth has to be cleaned from the roots, for this good quality education system has to be implemented, and emphasis should be given on moral knowledge.
