Former President submitted report to President on One Nation, One Election

The committee headed by former President of the country Ram Nath Kovind on ‘One Nation, One Election’ has submitted a report of 18,626 pages to President Draupadi Murmu on March 14.

The committee has prepared this report after doing research for more than 6 months. According to reports, it has been said to conduct simultaneous elections in the country in the year 2029. For this, it might be possible that, after amending the articles of the Constitution, it includes the talk of keeping a single voter list for Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha and local elections.

The committee’s reports and those speaking in its favor say that elections will be held once at a low cost, which will save money,There will be an increase in voter turnout and, at the same time, parties will campaign in fewer elections, which will allow more time to devote to governance in social welfare.

47 political parties in the country gave their opinion to the committee on One Nation, One Election, out of which 32 have voted in favor, while 15 have voted against. The upcoming elections i.e. Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to be held in 2029 can be held together, while in the second phase, local body elections can be held within 100 days.

One Nation, One Election means that Assembly elections and Lok Sabha elections should be held simultaneously in all the states. 8 members are included for this, this committee is headed by former President Ramnath Kovind, apart from Home Minister Amit Shah, Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Chairman of Finance Commission NK Singh, former Secretary General of Lok Sabha Subhash Kashyap, Senior Advocate Harish Salve and former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari are also included.

The first elections of independent India in 1951-52, Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were held simultaneously in all the states. Even after this, elections were held simultaneously in 1957, 1962 and 1967.
