Holi: A colourful symbol of new beginning

Holi is the festival of colours. As soon as we hear the word Holi, waves of excitement and enthusiasm start running through our minds and the mind becomes happy, a different scene starts forming in our minds as soon as we hear the name, which is quite beautiful. This beautiful scene forms billions of types of pictures in the minds of crores of Indians. This is the festival of colours, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm and zeal. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring. This year Holi was celebrated on 25th March.

Beginning of Holi

According to legend, a king named Hiranyakashyap used to tell his subjects that all of you should worship me. In that kingdom, he used to impose his views on the people and harm society. Hiranyakashyap had a son named Prahlad, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. The king did not like this because he wanted Prahlad to give up his faith in Lord Vishnu and stop worshiping him. When Prahlad refused to do so, Hiranyakashyap tried to kill him several times.

Hiranyakashyap’s sister Holika had a divine boon that she would not be burnt by fire. To kill Prahlad, the king made him sit in Holika’s lap and set both of them on fire. With the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Prahlad, who kept chanting his name, survived but Holika was burnt in the same fire. That is why Holika Dahan is performed a day before Holi to symbolise the victory of good over evil. Holi is also a celebration of the divine love between Lord Krishna and Radha. Therefore, an elaborate Holi is played in Mathura and Vrindavan.

People used to apply gulaal, abir and colours made from flowers to each other. As soon as gulaal was applied, a different positive energy was felt, and it also protected us from many diseases, but nowadays, people apply adulterated colours which also harm the body.

When the Holi of Majhgawan used to be celebrated about 29 years ago, it used to draw everyone to the village. The elderly, the young and the people who have settled in some city outside the village are not seen in the village throughout the year, but in the month of Holi, they will be seen in the village only. Bhikhu Singh ji, who has been selflessly contributing to the education sector of the village, people used to sing Holi folk songs at his door about a month before Holi. If there was any estrangement or any kind of fight with anyone in the whole year, they forget everything in that month of Holi, and start living with love afresh. Holika Dahan is done the day before Holi and on the same day many types of food dishes are cooked, like Dhuska, Pua, Dahi Vada, Namikan etc. At that time, the entire village enjoys singing Holi songs and playing the Dholak at Bhikhu Singh’s door. The door is attached to the house; in simple terms, it can be called a Chaupal, which is not attached to a tree but is a large empty space in a part of the house where everybody sits. From that Chaupal, all the people collect wood in an empty space near the village temple while playing the Dholak and singing songs and the wood collected at that place is set on fire; all the people of the village are present in front of the burning wood.

If there is a death in somebody’s family, then no auspicious work like marriage, Chhath Puja, etc. Is done at that person’s house for the entire year; but after Holika Dahan, everything starts afresh.

On the day of Holi, everyone participates in the musical programme at the Chaupal door, forgetting all the things like fights, anger, revenge, grudges etc. They apply gulal to each other. Children apply gulal on the feet of their elders and seek blessings. People of equal age apply gulal and abir on each other’s cheeks.

Now in the present situation, everything is changing and the tune of dholak is now rarely heard in Holi Majhgawan. Now the young generation celebrates Holi by dancing to the tunes of younger DJ. Since the beginning, the festival of Holi has been known for love, enthusiasm and people living in one bond with affection.
